Rejoice, Hong Kong! While we are still being grounded for a second Christmas, at least Christmas markets and celebrations are returning — fingers-crossed.

Remember how the fourth wave of coronavirus had pretty much cancelled all festivities last December? Well, at this stage, the city is bracing for a colder and more jubilant Christmas for 2021.

Here are six Christmas markets around Hong Kong you shouldn’t miss.

Stanley Plaza Wild West Adventure Christmas Market

Where: Stanley Plaza
When: 11-12, 18-19, 24-27 December 2021
Link: Stanley Plaza Wild West Adventure Christmas Market

One of the most anticipated markets in town, Stanley’s Christmas Market 2021 will be themed on a Wild West mining town.

We aren’t sure if there will be “longhorns and bucking broncos” as promised on the leaflet, but there will certainly be more than 60 pop-up stalls at the market, selling food and handicrafts.

Wild West Themed games aren’t complete without a gold mining game — which will give out real gold as rewards daily during the event.

For real Cheapos, you should get tickets for free land or sea shuttles that ferry visitors between the market and various districts on Hong Kong Island.

Upper House’s Christmas House Market

Where: Upper House, Admiralty
When: 4-5 December 2021
Website: Upper House’s website

The popular Upper House’s Christmas market returns to the outdoor Lawn and the scenic Sky Lounge of the hotel.

While the location of this market is nothing “Cheapo”, the well-curated market that supports 30 quality homegrown brands and a good cause deserves a visit. Some 10% of the profits from the market will be donated to the Hong Kong Down Syndrome Association.

There will be Christmas food and drinks galore. You can also learn to make your own Christmas wreath at their wreath workshop.

D2 Place Ninja Villa and weekend Christmas markets

Where: D2 Place, Lai Chi Kok
When: 27 Nov 2021 to 2 Jan 2022 (Markets are only open at weekends)
Website: D2 Place’s Christmas Markets

Arguably the best local handicrafts wonderland in Hong Kong, D2 Place has been famous for its hip and fun weekend markets featuring playful themes and beautiful local brands.

D2 Place will host a different Christmas market each weekend in December. Little Monster Winter Travel Tour highlights local artist Grace Kam (GK Doodle)’s work as well as other local craft makers. JW Mart is a Christmas market hosted and organized by a young group specialising in throwing weekend markets.

From 23rd to 27th December, there will be a “Where is Santa Claus – Theme Market”. The market will boast about 200 stalls. Some 10 Santa Clauses are hidden within the market. Market shoppers can hop from stall to stall looking for a Christmas gift while searching for Santa Clauses to win a prize.

Throughout the month, the arty shopping mall would whisk visitors away to an occasionally snowy ninja village exhibition (on the rooftop). Visits are divided into sessions of 25 minutes. Games and displays will offer plenty of Instagram opportunities as well as ninja training.

Four tickets are given out for any purchase of more than HK$200.00.

Discovery Bay Christmas Markets

Where: DB Plaza, Discovery Bay
When: 12, 19 December 2021
Website: Handmade Hong Kong

Want to combine unique Christmas shopping, and a relaxing island getaway? Discovery Bay’s Christmas Market is the right market for you.

With over 100 local brands and makers, Discovery Bay’s Christmas Market is one of the most vibrant community markets in Hong Kong.

Hosted by Handmade Hong Kong, Discovery Bay’s Sunday Market is a regular craft maker market aiming to foster a sense of “old-fashioned neighbourliness”.

Check out the list of vendors on their websites and come up with a market game plan before visiting.

‘Tis The Season of Tai Kwun’ and ‘Circus Plays’

Where: Tai Kwun, Central
When: 15 December, 2021- 2 Jan, 2022
Website: Circus Plays and Tis The Season of Tai Kwun

We know it isn’t exactly a “market” — but with a 12-metre-tall Christmas Tree, special F&B and retail offerings as well as free Christmas workshops and performances, we think it is one Christmas event everyone should go to.

Dubbed the Giving Tree, the dazzling installation is created by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Visitors can buy the ornaments displayed on the tree. The sales proceeds, together with a matching donation by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, will go to the Community Chest of Hong Kong.

One of the highly anticipated shows is Flotados by the award-winning creative team from Spain. It involves a grand piano hanging 8 metres above ground, two acrobatics dancers and a love story. (Need we say more?)

There will also be multiple Nutcracker-themed workshops during the holidays — from Crystal Ball-making to Upcycling puppets.

Workshops are free of charge and require bookings online.

Citygate Outlets, Tung Chung
When: 26 Nov, 2021- 2 Jan, 2022 (Outdoor market: 10-12, 17-19 amd 24-27 December, 2021)
Website: CityGates’s website

Teaming up with German woodcraft brand Wendt & Kühn, Citygate Outlets will be decorated with a gigantic wooden music box and a wooden Christmas tree.

During the weekends of December, there will be an outdoor market with about 40 stalls and live music performances. It will also be the first pop-up store in Hong Kong for Wendt & Kühn where you can bring home their famous wooden angles and music boxes.

Citygate Outlets aren’t the only shopping mall throwing Christmas markets.

Malls like Maritime Square and the LOHAS will lure visitors with “falling snow” and Christmas Marts from now until January 2md, 2022.
