Hong Kong’s biggest museum dedicated to art got a major facelift in 2019, and has reopened with a shiny new facade and improved facilities (read about our first impressions).
The Museum of Art has a prime location right at the waterfront of Tsim Sha Tsui, and is close to a number of other attractions. It’s a stone’s throw from the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the Star Ferry, making it easily accessed by foot, ferry and by MTR.
Housing more than 17,000 exhibits, this museum promotes and celebrates Hong Kong and China’s long legacy of outstanding art. There are four core collections to explore: Chinese Antiquities; Chinese Painting and Calligraphy; China Trade Art; and Modern and Hong Kong Art. These provide a broad variety of classic and modern, local and international, Chinese and Western.
One of the permanent galleries is dedicated to the works of Wu Guanzhong, internationally acclaimed as a master of Chinese ink painting, with extensive knowledge of art of both the East and the West.
There are also many special exhibitions and events, often collaborating with museums from around the globe to bring well known works of art to Hong Kong.
Like many of Hong Kong’s public museums the Museum of Art is free admission. The museum is closed on Thursdays, and the first two days of the Chinese New Year.
Otherwise, the opening hours are as follows:
Be sure to visit their beautiful outdoor terrace, with uninterrupted views of Victoria Harbour.
