There are two main things of note about Sunny Bay: its link to Disneyland, and its name.
The Disneyland part is simple: this is where you’ll find one of the two stations on the Disneyland Resort MTR line.
The story of Sunny Bay’s name is far more interesting though. You see, the name of this bay in Cantonese used to be Yam O (陰澳) which literally means something like “Dark Bay”. The “陰” part of the name refers to a gloomy place on the north side of a hill and/or on the south of a body of water. The original name neatly summed up the bay’s shady location.
However, when Hong Kong’s Disneyland was being planned, asking visitors to take the train to Gloomy Bay didn’t fit the brand. So the name was changed from Yam O to Yan O (欣澳). Which means more or less the complete opposite thing.
Not everyone was happy about the change.
