Halloween in Hong Kong is definitely not for the kids. There is no trick or treating, or kindly neighbours doling out handfuls of candies to innocent, wide-eyed kids in their favorite costumes. Halloween in Hong Kong is for the adults, who seem all too happy to shed their corporate suits and revert to their dress-up days, with elaborate get-ups that range from full-body chicken suits to the typical “sexy something” costume (sexy nurse/sexy librarian/sexy police officer? Does it really matter? It just needs to be sexy). That’s not to say that the adults have all the fun. There are a number of Halloween events suitable for all ages that take place at Hong Kong’s favourite theme parks: Disneyland Halloween Time September 12 to October 31 Hong Kong Disneyland is already in full swing with its 2019 Halloween event, ‘Disneyland Halloween Time’, which runs until the night of October 31. Disney’s classic villains are back, and ready to turn the Happiest Place on Earth into the spookiest place in Hong Kong, with a special ‘Let’s Get Wicked’ show, Jack Skellington’s Villainous Gathering, and a chance to Meet the Villains, featuring Disney’s scariest characters. Mickey & Friends will be also in Halloween Costumes, and there’s a special Halloween Time Street Party and Parade. Ocean Park’s Halloween Fest October 4, 11, 18-20, 24-27, 31 Important Ocean Park announced that it has cancelled this event on 31 October 2019 due to the current situation in Hong Kong. Ocean Park’s Halloween Fest runs from October 4 to 31, with the spooky stuff coming out at 5 pm every evening. But the real Halloween action happens every Friday to Sunday in October, with different haunted themes around the park. At 8:44 pm, swarms of hungry ghosts will invade the Waterfront and Summit areas, with a terrifying crescendo at 10:30 pm. Each zone has its own theme, such as the Wasteland Warzone, the Temple of Sorrow, and the Deadly Seas. Early bird tickets are on sale now. Hong Kong Halloween parties Now, on to the parties. This year Halloween falls on a Thursday, so you can expect the previous weekend (October 25–27) to be full of parties and events, in addition to the actual Halloween night on October 31. Pubs, nightclubs, and bars in areas like Central and Wan Chai tend to have the most Halloween themes going on. Lan Kwai Fong Halloween Street Party Lan Kwai Fong is the natural epicentre of the action, with its massive annual Halloween Street Party. Every bar and club goes all out with elaborate haunted themes, big-name DJs, and all night parties, and the streets and alleys in Lan Kwai Fong overflow with people. The nightclubs typically do require a ticket or an entrance fee at the door, and often include all-night drinks, food and other refreshments. Entrance can range from to well more than double that amount, depending on the party. If you’re a true cheapo, simply don a costume (or at least a silly hat, for goodness’ sake) and enjoy the vibe in Lan Kwai Fong on the streets, without paying a cent for entrance fees. Halloween is extremely popular in Lan Kwai Fong, so you can expect massive crowds and music blasting from every direction. Drinks from the 7-11 are, of course, a cheapo’s delight on Halloween night. There are a wide choice of parties in Lan Kwai Fong to check out if you absolutely must go inside and party with all the beautiful people. Tickets will be required, and typically range from to , but this will usually include either a certain number of drinks, or free-flow drinks all night, plus live bands and entertainment. Dead Not Alive One of Hong Kong’s most famous parties is Dead Not Alive, which for more than a decade has thrown legendary all-night Halloween bashes, with costume competitions, famous DJs, live bands, dancers, and lots of debauchery. This year’s event, Awakendead Halloween 2019, is being held in a new location, the West Kowloon Cultural District, on the night of Saturday 26 October. Dead Not Alive is promising a “monstrous lineup” of live music, headlined by grunge tribute band Nirvana Tribute, and a “once in a lifetime experience” at Hong Kong’s biggest Halloween party.
