However, as a city that prioritises its social scene, there are a number of bars that boast outdoor spaces. From chic rooftops that overlook the harbour, cozy patios nestled in hidden corners, or breezy beachside terraces, there are plenty of options to sip and soak up the magic of Hong Kong. Here are our favourite alfresco bars with either rooftops, terraces or patios to enjoy a beverage outside. Hong Kong Island Hong Kong Island is where the city's vibrant energy meets stunning scenery. As the historic heart of Hong Kong, it's home to iconic attractions like Victoria Peak, the Star Ferry and Stanley Market. Its open-air terrace combines laid-back elegance with a lively atmosphere, making it a favourite spot for the surrounding Quarry Bay and Tai Koo professionals. Sip on unique seasonal cocktails as well as delicious classics and a wide range of beers and wines. Snack on Japanese inspired bar plates such as Katsu sando’s, hokkaido scallop yakitori and wagyu tataki. With resident DJs setting the mood as the sun sets, Sugar is the perfect spot for relaxed evenings, lively gatherings, or after-work wind-downs. Prime tables get snapped up quickly so arrive early so you can get settled in for the night. With its massive terrace, colourful atmosphere, and irresistible happy hour deals, it’s easy to forget you’re in the middle of one of Hong Kong’s busiest districts. There’s a wide variety of margaritas (classic or frozen), as well as an extensive cocktail, mocktail, beer, and wine list. Happy hour runs from 3-7pm on weekdays where you can get discounted drinks or 48oz pitchers of margs for . The food menu is split into things “north or south of the border” so there’s a wide variety of Tex Mex classics (think tacos and quesadillas) as well as burgers, pizzas and BBQ to line the stomach with. Open from 8am, you don’t have to come here just for drinks either and can enjoy a hearty al fresco breakfast before heading out to explore Hong Kong. However, with an extensive bar menu (did someone say espresso martinis?), a 3-7pm happy hour and tantalising bar bites, you may prefer to spend your evening here instead. Bonus: there are massive standing fans which significantly help cool things down so you can still enjoy some outdoors even on the sweatiest of days. Limewood by Repulse Bay beach offers a refreshing alternative to the fancy urban rooftops of town with ocean views, tropical flavors, and a laid-back atmosphere. It only has a few stools to perch outside but its open-air design means you can sit by the open front and be as close to the beach as you can without getting sandy. All your holiday cocktail classics are available - mojitos, margaritas, pina coladas as well as refreshing non alcoholic options and an indulgent menu inspired by Southeast Asian, Mexican, Hawaiian, and Caribbean flavours. Tai Kwun Tai Kwun, 10 Hollywood Rd, Central Mon-Sun: 8:00am-11:00pm Once the Central Police Station Compound, Tai Kwun has been beautifully restored to blend together fascinating historic architecture with contemporary culture. Art exhibitions, performances and seasonal events are regularly held here so it’s worth checking the website before you go to see what might be on. At the centre of the complex you’ll find a spacious courtyard with several bars and restaurants dotted around the edge, most of which with alfresco seating. Situated close to hundreds of bars and restaurants, Tai Kwun is the perfect spot to soak up the final rays of the day before heading out to enjoy the rest of the evening. Kowloon Kowloon, sitting across the Harbour from Hong Kong Island, is a lively district packed with culture and shopping. Wander through the neon-lit streets of Mong Kok or explore the luxurious shops along Nathan Road. Terrible Baby 4/F Eaton HK, 380 Nathan Road, Jordan, Kowloon +852 2710 1866 Sun-Thur: 2:00pm-12:00am, Fri-Sat: 2:00pm-2:00am $$ Proving that it’s not just Hong Kong island that gets to have all the fun, Terrible Baby is a hidden gem in Kowloon that effortlessly blends edgy creativity with laid-back rooftop vibes. With a lush garden terrace offering sweeping views of Jordan, it’s the perfect spot to sip on expertly crafted cocktails and unwind. There’s an extensive drinks menu, but the cocktails really steal the show, alongside regular live performances in the Music Room. Plus, it’s dog friendly - woof to that! Happy hour runs from 2pm-7pm, Thursday to Sunday with selected drinks only each and if you’re there on the weekend, stick around for the power hour from 12:30-1:30am for selected drinks at the same reduced price. Kaboom 20/F, Prince Tower, 12A Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon +852 3708 8114 Mon-Wed & Sun: 12:00pm-1:00am, Thu-Sat 12:00pm-2:00am $ Perched atop Prince Tower in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kaboom delivers a vibrant rooftop escape with stunning 270° views over Victoria Harbour. This tropical-inspired lounge and restaurant is decked with bamboo and creates laid-back beachside vibes, perfect for a casual catch up or a more special celebration. The drinks menu is vast and features playful, comically named cocktails (e.g. Life Sucks, I need to keep fit!) as well as a decent selection of wines and beers. Whether you're here for sunset sips, late-night shisha, or weekend gatherings, Kaboom has got you covered. Hint: the terrace gets busy quickly, especially on weekends so get there early to get a table. Garage bar The Cordis Hotel, 555 Shanghai Street, Mongkok, Kowloon +852 3552 3388 Mon-Sun: 5:00pm-1:00am $$ Garage Bar, smack bang in the middle of Mongkok offers a casual patio with plenty of comfortable seats to enjoy some refreshing craft beers and snacks. Located on the fourth floor of the Cordis Hotel, this vibrant outdoor venue is distinguished by its centerpiece—two retro Citroën trucks that offer simple but creative bar bites. Craft beer is definitely the highlight of the menu though and there’s a decent range of local and international beers as well as seasonal specials. Be sure to stop by for their “buy one get one” happy hour which runs from 5pm-8pm every day. Vibes 5/F, The Mira Hong Kong, Mira Place, 118 – 130 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon +852 2315 5599 Sun-Thurs: 4:00pm-1:00am, Fri-Sat: 4:00pm-1:30am $$ The Mira hotel is known for its contemporary, elegant and stylish design, offering guests a luxurious retreat in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui. Its in-house bar, Vibes, mirrors the hotel's design and provides guests with a relaxing yet atmospheric courtyard terrace, surrounded by bamboo-lined walls and soft, ambient lighting. There’s a decent bar bites menu with more than just snacks as well as deliciously creative cocktails and a huge range of premium wines and spirits. Gin your thing? Head to Vibes on Thursdays for G&T night featuring a live DJ or check out their regular happy hour from Sunday to Thursday between 4pm-8pm. Outlying Islands The Outlying Islands offer a refreshing escape from the city's hustle. Lantau Island is home to the towering Big Buddha and the serene Tai O fishing village, where traditional stilt houses line the waterfront. This island eatery, from the creative minds behind fan favourites Honky Tonks Tavern and Shady Acres, offers a perfect escape from city life, just 27 minutes by ferry from Central. With its vibrant atmosphere, generous hospitality, and a sun-kissed dining experience, Terracotta exudes effortless cool. Its menu reflects a love for bold, comforting flavors, making it an ideal spot for leisurely afternoons after a hike or a lively Sunday feast. The locals may have feared the “arrival of the hipsters” to their beloved island but Terracotta has quickly charmed those that have experienced this seaside home away from home. Every weekend, its spacious terrace comes alive with the vibrant energy of beachgoers, hikers, and Lantau residents, all drawn by the enticing mix of refreshing drinks, delicious food, and live DJ performances. The extensive menu offers something for everyone, from cocktails and fine wines to draught and bottled beers, ciders, and soft drinks.
