The view over Victoria Harbour is hard to beat, but during the New Year’s Eve fireworks display, it’s even better. No wonder huge crowds gather for the spectacle. Here are our top tips for how to see the fireworks, whether you want to get in among the crowds or seek an alternative viewpoint. Kowloon side Some of the densest crowds will be found on Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and Avenue of Stars. Here, the views are great, but you’ll need to arrive early to get a spot. Alternatives are West Kowloon Cultural District and Hung Hom Promenade, both of which offer clear views of the harbour. Hong Kong Island The most popular spot to view the display is the area from Central Harbourfront to Tamar Park in Admiralty. Again, it’s worth arriving early to bag a spot. To the east, Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai, and to the west, Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park in Sheung Wan, are popular spots, too. A view from above Get above the crowds and see the action from a different angle by heading up The Peak. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to see in the new year with a hike, Jardine’s Lookout offers one of the best views over Victoria Harbour from above. Hop on the number 6 bus, which runs between Central and Stanley, and get off at Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park. Head up the hill towards Hong Kong Parkview before taking a right onto the Wilson Trail. The hike is less than 2km each-way. But be prepared for a steep climb (it’ll be worth it!) Splash out on drinks at a rooftop bar For a more luxe experience, you can always head to one of Hong Kong’s many rooftop bars. Eye Bar is a perennial favourite for harbour views, while Aqua is another boujee option. Or really push the boat out with a harbour cruise Junk boat trips are one of Hong Kong’s favourite social activities. Get a big group of friends together and hire a boat from which you’ll have an unrestricted view of the action. Various providers offer packages with or without food and drink included. Or, if you have a smaller group, there’s the option of joining an organised New Year’s Eve harbour cruise.
