Taobao has recently introduced an English-language interface, making it much easier for non-Chinese speakers to browse, shop, and navigate the platform.
Taobao is known for its unbeatable deals on everything from fashion to homeware, but the language barrier has long been a challenge for those shopping in English. That’s finally changing; for English-speaking Hongkongers who’ve been hesitant to dive into Taobao, now’s the perfect time to take the plunge and score a cheap deal.
How to switch to the English interface
Getting started with Taobao in English is simple. If you already have the app, make sure it’s updated to the latest version. Then, follow these steps:
- Open the Taobao app and go to ‘Account’ in the bottom right corner.
- Tap the ‘Settings’ icon in the top right.
- Select ‘Country/region, language, currency.’
- Set the fields to Hong Kong, English, and HKD.
Once updated, your Taobao experience will be in English, including product descriptions, pricing, and customer support.
What to Expect When Shopping
Taobao offers a huge selection of products at competitive prices, but navigating a new platform can still feel daunting. The new interface provides key details in English, but product reviews and seller information may still be in Chinese, so browser translation tools or checking customer photos might help when deciding what to buy.
Payment is straightforward, with options like AlipayHK, PayMe, Visa, Mastercard, and PPS all supported. Delivery can be arranged directly to your address or to one of over 1,000 self-pickup points around Hong Kong.

Taobao has regular seasonal promotions, such as for Fashion Week during March, featuring new seasonal trends, exclusive discounts, and free shipping on select items. To celebrate the launch of the English app interface, new users can also score special perks in the form of a limited-time 50 RMB discount off a 51 RMB purchase, and free shipping on items more than 99 RMB. Those paying with AlipayHK, PayMe, or Bank of China credit cards can access additional savings.

Spanning 25,000 square feet, the showroom lets shoppers explore furniture and home décor from over 100 Taobao sellers before placing an order through the app. It also features AI and AR tools to help visualise pieces in different spaces, along with renovation materials for home projects. Visitors can unlock in-store promo codes for extra savings on home purchases, too.
