Located in East Kowloon, Kwun Tong was once the beating heart of Hong Kong’s industrial sector. In the mid-20th century, the area was home to factories and manufacturing plants that helped drive the city’s economic boom. Though it’s not typically on the tourist radar, today Kwun Tong has evolved to include a sprawling shopping mall and no-frills eateries which sit alongside remnants of its industrial past.

What to see and do in Kwun Tong

Kwun Tong is home to the massive APM Mall, a retail hotspot that is open daily until 11pm, making it perfect for those who like to shop late into the night. With a mix of international and local brands plus a series of pop-up stores keeping things fresh, you’ll find everything from trendy fashion to electronics and cosmetics.

For something a little more offbeat, head over to Shui Wo Street, a second-hand shopping destination where you can sift through vintage clothing, homeware, and other hidden gems. A couple of key spots for bargain hunters with a love for unique clothing are Kittmall Vintage Clothing Store and Greenies.

When you need a break from the bustling streets, the Kwun Tong Promenade offers a scenic respite. This 200-metre-long waterfront park, formerly a recycling depot, provides lovely views of Victoria Harbour and is a popular spot for evening strolls or relaxing with a snack.

What to eat and drink in Kwun Tong

Kwun Tong is a paradise for cheap eats, with Shui Wo Street Market being one of the best places to grab a bite. Whether you’re craving fresh dim sum, stir-fried noodles, or seafood straight from the market, there are plenty of hearty portions of Hong Kong classics to choose from at affordable prices.

Kwun Tong is also home to several hotpot spots, which is a popular Hong Kong tradition where you cook your choice of ingredients—from thinly sliced meats to fresh veggies—in a shared pot of broth. A particularly fun way to dine with friends, Hotpot Foodie is one such restaurant where you can have a go at cooking your own meal.

Where to stay in Kwun Tong

Several hotel options on the 4-star mark in the area will ensure you a comfortable stay without breaking the bank. On the lowest end of the price point, Hotel COZi Harbour View is a solid choice. Located just a short walk from Kwun Tong MTR Station, it offers clean, comfortable rooms at reasonable prices.

Dorsett Kwun Tong is a slightly pricier option, but the addition of a rooftop pool is a major plus. It offers an international buffet breakfast daily, alongside its own Chinese restaurant, and is also close to Kwun Tong’s main attractions.

Another great option is Nina Hotel Kowloon East, which boasts spacious rooms and a range of amenities, including an outdoor pool and fitness centre. Its location is slightly further out from the centre of Kwun Tong, but only a few minutes walk from Ngau Tau Kok MTR station.
