A groundbreaking exhibition at M+ that reinterprets Picasso’s legacy through an unprecedented dialogue with Asian artists.
What to expect
For the first time in over a decade, Pablo Picasso’s masterpieces return to Hong Kong in a unique cross-cultural exhibition. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Picasso for Asia — A Conversation brings together over 60 iconic works by Picasso from the Musée national Picasso – Paris alongside 130 pieces by 30 Asian and Asian-diasporic artists.
This first-of-its-kind exhibition explores Picasso’s enduring influence through four key themes:
- The Genius – Picasso as the ultimate artist-prodigy and innovator.
- The Outsider – His rejection of artistic norms and embrace of diverse cultural influences.
- The Magician – Transforming everyday objects into extraordinary works.
- The Apprentice – His lifelong engagement with art history and constant reinvention.
Major works on display include Portrait of Dora Maar (1937), Massacre in Korea (1951), and The Bathers (1956). These are exhibited in dialogue with contemporary artists like Isamu Noguchi, Luis Chan, Nalini Malani, Haegue Yang, and Tanaami Keiichi, with new commissions from Simon Fujiwara and Sin Wai Kin.
Beyond the artworks, visitors can engage with multimedia experiences, guided tours, and family-friendly activities. Public programs include talks, film screenings, and educational workshops exploring Picasso’s impact on contemporary art. M+ Cinema will present Picasso on Film — The Making of an Icon, a curated series featuring classics like Guernica (1950) and The Mystery of Picasso (1956).
The M+ Shop offers exclusive Picasso-inspired merchandise, including T-shirts, tote bags, and more.
