Myths, Monsters, and Manga: The Art of Fantasy in Asia

Hotel Options

This groundbreaking exhibition traces the evolution of fantasy in Asian visual culture and its global impact.

What to expect

The exhibition traces how fantasy has shaped Asian art from the nineteenth century to the present, revealing its role as a creative response to shifting sociopolitical conditions.

Unfolding across four chapters, the exhibition moves from pre‑modern traditions such as Japanese ukiyo‑e prints, Indonesian shadow puppetry, and Buddhist scrolls to twentieth‑century developments like Surrealism and the rise of manga and anime. It culminates in the global spread of fantastical aesthetics across art, design, film, fashion, and digital culture, showing how fantasy continues to move fluidly across disciplines in the twenty‑first century.
