HKSAR Establishment Day

July 1 marks HKSAR Establishment Day, commemorating the handover.

What happens

2024 marks the 27th anniversary of the handover. July 1 is a public holiday, and it falls on a Monday this year. Put differently, it’s time to enjoy a long weekend!

To mark this holiday, the HKSAR government is offering a variety of freebies.

See the list below:

  • Free rides on the tram: Trundle along the length of Hong Kong Island– for free! For ideas, make sure to check out our self-guided tram tour.
  • Free rides on the Star Ferry: Experience an icon of Hong Kong: the venerable Star Ferry.
  • Free MTR rides: Kids aged three to 11 will be able to enjoy free rides on the MTR. Light rail and MTR buses will also provide free services for all passengers on the day.
  • Free access to the Hong Kong Wetland Park: Use the long weekend to go explore the New Territories. Yuen Long’s Wetland Park will be free to enter.
  • Free access to world-class exhibitions: All general admission exhibitions at the M+ museum, along with all thematic exhibitions at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, will be free! Permanent exhibitions at the Hong Kong Science Museum and Hong Kong Space Museum (excluding Space Theatre shows), as well as the special exhibition ‘The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Fragrance of Time – In Search of Chinese Art of Scent’ at the Hong Kong Museum of Art will be free to enter.

Besides these freebies, various restaurants around town will be offering special deals.

Organisers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
